Elm is a small village in the valley Sernftal. The Sernftal is situated within the Kanton Glarus, Switzerland. The village Elm won several prices including the famous switzer Wakker price because of his beautiful old houses. In summer, its possible to walk trough the mountains or to do some bicyling. In winter, downhill skiing is the favorite sport. The ski and hiking region 'Freiberg Kärpf' is the oldest reservat within Switzerland.
Landmark of Elm is the 'Martinsloch', a whole in a mountain range called 'Tschingelhörner'. At 12. /13. of March and 1./2. of October the sun is falling straight trough the Martinsloch enlightning the roof of Elm's church.
Elm has a troubled history. General Suworow, a general fighting the french was retreating his army into the Sernftal. He arrived at Elm on October, the 6. th 1799 with about 10000 soldiers. But for a small village like Elm with about 800 residents today, such an army was running out of food immediatly. Guides from Elm leaded the armee up the mountains to the 'Panixer-Paß', a pass through the mountains to the next valley. Half the way, the guides wiped of their lamps and returned to Elm. The armee escaped but many people died crossing the mountains.
A small museum in Elm gives insight to mining in the region of Elm. The slate mines were closed only a few centuries ago. 1881 a part of the montains crashed downhill caused by mining. Parts of Elm were destroyed. A memorial at the church of Elm commemorates the victims.
